Class Description: If you’d like to learn how to make a compact, functional bag, this class is for you. The bag includes multiple pockets, including a deep back pocket for a phone, boarding pass, or glasses, and a flap that hides a zipper closure. It also has an adjustable, detachable strap that can be covered with fabric or made with designer strapping. In this course, you’ll learn to work with vinyl, install zippers and magnets, and add binding to a bag.

Purchase pattern before class at Honey Bee.

Downloading and watching the free Add-on video (a code is included in the pattern) prior to selecting fabrics is highly recommended.

Complete prior to class

Students need to have fabrics cut, pre-quilted Steps IA-B and II B-C as per instructions on pages 2 & 3 of the pattern.

Class Supplies: Refer to the pattern for fabric, hardware, ByAnnies’ Soft and Stable, fusible interfacing, zippers, magnets, and strapping.

• Be sure to purchase handbag zippers (Pam Damour and Sallie Tomato zippers by the yard can work) Honey Bee also sells the By Annie Zippers
• Thread (I use Aurifil) in colors that blend with main and lining fabric and matches zipper tape.

• Sewing Machine with ¼ inch, zipper foot, walking foot, and nonstick foot (optional).
•       Rotary cutter, mat, and quilters ruler (6 ½ x 6 ½, 6x24, 16 ½x16 ½)
•       Basic Sewing Supplies: Scissors, needles, thread, seam ripper, straight pins/ wonder clips, stiletto, large safety pin, or bodkin
•        Removable markers or chalk (Frixon pens can work, I prefer to use white Chaco Liner).
•       Template plastic, or 2 ½ inch circle ruler.
•       Masking tape
•       Washable glue stick
•       Small iron with a thick ironing mat that the heat will not burn through to the tables we are using.

Optional Supplies

•       Small swivel hook
•       SewTites HD magnetic pins to hold vinyl in place.
•       Quick Turn fabric turning tool.

Fabric:  3 coordinating ½ yards (a little larger if using directional prints). One each for the main body of the bag, the lining, and the binding/strap.
