Beginner Quilting

Saturdays: Aug 26, Sep 16, & Sep 30                 10:30 - 4:30 pm
In this class you will be given the opportunity to create a simple Rail Fence Quilt from start to finish. You will learn how to use different quilting tools including a rotary cutter and ruler to accurately cut your fabric. You will learn how to sew accurate 1/4” seams, the importance of pressing your fabric before and during the construction of your quilt top. In the third session I will show you how to pin baste, machine quilt and bind your quilt.

Class Prep: Read pages 8-9 & 22 in the Start Quilting book and purchase your fabric prior to class. If you would like assistance selecting fabrics, any Honey Bee Associate will be happy to help. 


  •        Sewing machine in good working condition with a few empty bobbins.
  •        Size 70 or 80 sewing machine needle for piecing (universal or microtech)
  •        50 wt. thread (neutral color such as gray or cream)
  •        Cutting mat: 18 x 24 or 24 x 36
  •        Rotary cutter: 45mm (most common) or 60mm
  •        Scissors (small for snipping threads)
  •        Ruler 6.5” x 12.5” or 6.5” x 24.5”
  •        Seam ripper
  •        Stiletto (optional)
  •        Patchwork/Quilting pins
  •        Fabric marking pencil/pen
  •        Quarter inch foot (if you don’t have this we’ll use tape to mark your sewing line)
  •        Sewing machine Users Guide

To complete the construction of your quilt on days 2 & 3 you will need:

  •        Safety pins (small curved ones work best)
  •        Quik-Klip tool or a teaspoon
  •        Walking foot (we’ll talk about this foot in class)
  •        Masking or painters tape 1” wide.
  •        Batting
