Block Workshop: Cotton Leaves (Beginner to Advanced)

Design your own quilt using the Cotton Leaves block, choosing colors, number of blocks, setting and finished size. As you do so, Nancie helps with the math, offers construction tips and design advice, and generally assists with all stages of quilt-making.

Class meets once a month, for three months

Supplies to bring to class:

  •       Rotary cutter
  •       Cutting mat to use at your table
  •       Acrylic rulers, long and short
  •       Optional: Half-square triangle ruler  (Creative Grids 45)
  •       Sewing accessories (scissors, pins, etc.)
  •       Fabrics
  •       Thread for piecing
  •       Sewing machine with ¼” foot and other accessories
  •       Bobbins, wound and ready

Choosing your fabrics:

The Cotton Leaves block requires 2 colors and a background fabric. All blocks can be made with the same three fabrics or select multiple fabrics for one part of the star. See examples below for inspiration!

You may bring fabric from home if you wish. If you’re undecided about which ones to use, we’ll evaluate the options in class.

Below is what I used in my quilt to help you estimate what you might need for your quilt.

  •       12 blocks, 12” finished = 40” x 53”
  •       Large triangles (teal) = ½ yard
  •       Small triangles (black scraps)  ¼ yard
  •       Center squares ¼ yard
  •       Background = 1 yard
  •       1” sashing and 1.25” border =  5/8 yard
  •       Binding = ½ yard
  •       Backing = 1 5/8 yards
