Honey Bee Quilt Store was started by three sisters who had always dreamed of opening a quilt store when we were “little old ladies”. A successful quilt store closed because the owners were retiring. So we decided to move our plan up a few years and try this business.
We are Dianne Ferguson, Maryann Westerberg and Carolyn Thompson. We incorporated in October 2001. We attended our first market the same month to make contacts with the various vendors whose fabric we loved as quilters.
We signed a lease on a retail space in February and opened our doors at the end of March 2002. Our philosophy was and is customer service, customer service, customer service! To that end, we wanted to open with a very nice selection of fabrics, patterns, books and notions. We wanted to provide the best customer service and shopping experience for every person that walked through our doors.
Dianne’s husband was laid off from his job of 18 years a couple weeks before we opened. He became our carpenter and spent much time and vented much frustration hammering, painting, sawing, etc., as he put our shop’s fixtures together.
Life stepped in the way of our dream. Carolyn is a registered nurse and had to go back to nursing full time as she had two children at Texas A&M. Maryann had to move back to California for family reasons.
But even though Dianne owns the store alone now—she still gets help and input from her sisters! They are always a phone call away to help with models, attending market or working when we need extra help to cover for vacations or shop hops.
We love our customers and their quilts!
